They start thinking - can we really be as young as we look? Young, wild, gangly things, ragged and filthy, living amongst the bones.

Mercer is a worshipper of the Beast That Stalks in Long Grass and is a god-hunter contracted to take out The Trawler-man.

Personality

Mercer is abrasive and confrontational. She is authoritative, often making the decisions for both her and her sibling. She seems to heavily repress her past, in favour of appearing strong. She is headstrong and a fanatic of her god.

Background

Mercer grew up with Gage in a foundling-centre. At the foundling-centre, Gage and Mercer used to hide in the bathroom.

Mercer has a falsified story about their first sacrifice. She believes that she and Gage move and hunted as one with the Beast That Stalks In The Long Grass.

Gage reveals that they were running from him through the fields before they tripped and fell. Their 'sacrifice' was on top of Gage, choking them. Mercer came at him with a knife, and afterwards she sobbed.

Chapter 16: And the Current Flows On Without End	Mercer and Gage are approached by Adjudicator Shrue to hunt down gods for the Legislatures. They attack and kill worshippers of The Mire Hag. They are then contacted by Shrue and asked to hunt down the Trawler-man.
Chapter 17: If I Could Trace With Bloodless Fingers	Mercer and Gage brutally kill a schoolteacher for being a member of the Parish of Tide and Flesh, and burn the school down.
Chapter 21: We'd Both Go Plunging Downwards	Mercer and Gage are making good progress, hunting down followers of the Trawler-man. Shrue meets with them and tells them that they either need to tone things down or finish their work soon. Mercer tells them that killing a god requires this type of brutality.
Chapter 25: But We'll Never Be Rid Of Each Other	Mercer finds Gage, who has left their sister for a moment alone. She speaks about The Beast That Stalks In The Long Grass and her dream the previous night. Gage asks their sister if they remember their childhood. Gage and Mercer attack Leaning Larch Holiday Village and the Carving Chapter. Mercer frees Carpenter, recognising her from somewhere but unable to put the pieces together. When she realises, she circles back and attacks them but they escape. Gage tells her he's found the Homesick Corpse.
Chapter 28: To Drift On, To Dream, To Die	When Shrue doesn't give them permission to attack the Gulch, Mercer threatens them and the Legislatures' soldiers. Mercer and Gage argue. Gage tries to get Mercer to remember their past, but she is unable to. Gage and Mercer meet with Carpenter and Faulkner. Mercer taunts them both. The Siege begins.
Chapter 29: And Where My Final Footsteps Fall	Mercer attacks Faulkner. When Carpenter arrives to rescue him, Mercer turns on her. Gage arrives and relays the information that the hunt is off. Mercer is outraged and refuses to stop. As a result, Gage shoots her.

Connections

• Gage is Mercer's sibling. They let Mercer make the decisions of both of them. As Mercer becomes more and more obsessed with The Beast That Stalks In The Long Grass, Gage grows more and more distant from her. They ultimately confront Mercer about her refusal to acknowledge the truth of their past. In the end, Gage kills Mercer.

• Adjudicator Shrue hires Mercer and Gage as god-hunters. It is clear that neither party ever trust each other.
